out on the ocean

A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to go out on a seabird watching trip in the Cook Strait. I’ve been on a couple of these trips before and never pass up an opportunity to get out on the ocean, as they don’t come up very often. It’s pretty magical being surrounded by seabirds, and it’s nice for a change having them approach me rather than having to walk miles to find them in a forest.

The forecast for the day was fine with light winds, which is great for sea sickness but means there are less large albatross, as they need wind to take flight. We didn’t see any large albatross on the trip but were visited by several beautiful mollymawks. Although the day wasn’t as full of birds as I’d hoped, it was still a great opportunity for a change in scenery and it was nice to hang out with other bird nerds for the day.

Here are a bunch of photos from the day, I hope you enjoy them!
