Meeting Sirocco

ImageFor me, there's nothing more special than seeing a rare native bird. Sirocco is definitely rare, one of only 124 Kakapo left, he is currently vacationing at Zealandia (Wellington), and soon moving onto Orokonui EcoSanctuary (South Island). Sirocco loves people, he was hand-raised after suffering from a respiratory illness as a youngster, and as a result of that has a fondness for human company. ImageOfcourse Kakapo are nocturnal (Kakapo meaning night parrot) so the trip to see him begins in the evening, the paths at Zealandia are lit by fairy lights, as you make your way up the path you can see his enclosure.

ImageSirocco really is a beautiful bird, his plumage is stunning and he definitely has personality. He seems to really love the attention he receives, skarking at the 'oohs and 'aahs' as he does something funny or cheeky, he loves being the centre of attention.

ImageIt was a really great experience meeting Sirocco, I hope it won't be the last!
