Huia | Huia memory | New Zealand bird illustration art print
This art print depicts a pair of huia, a sadly extinct native bird.
Huia are icons of extinction, their tale is a sad one. Huia were once abundant throughout the North Island but hunting and predation by introduced predators lead them to their demise. Their beauty made their lives invaluable and instead their bodies were treasured as fashion accessories. Many were shot to be used as specimens and thousands of live birds were exported overseas. Gut wrenching stuff.
Today, huia are seen as a reminder of times gone by, when our native birds weren’t given the protection as they deserved. Thankfully today our remaining species are much more valued and we can look at the huia as a symbol of what is lost but not forgotten.
